Huckleberry Finn

March 27, 2015

I got to play Huckleberry Finn in Will & Company's tour of Tom Sawyer this year. We hit up a bunch of fun elementary schools in Southern California and got the kids excited about this classic piece of literature. I love how Mark Twain reminds adults what its like to be a kid. It brought me so much joy to play the town pariah. You have to admire Huck's tenacity and brutal honesty. I need to take a little bit of him with me and learn to be a little more selfish.

Growing up in Connecticut as a straight A student, I was trained to do everything "right." I'm the ultimate people pleaser and that has hurt me so much in my career. Instead of bringing my big personality into a meeting or an audition, so many times I have tried to be what I thought "they" wanted me to be. When in reality, casting directors want you to bring your own vibe into the room. Even if you aren't right for that role, they will want to know more about you and bring you in again. It's that extra something that no one can put their finger on that books jobs. And that's exactly what I found in Huck Finn. Today was our last Tom Sawyer of the season, and I'm a little sad to let Huck go.

So here's to letting Lexi out of the prim and proper interview skirt and the perfect audition outfit and just being myself. Sure sounds like more fun anyway...
